Neil Manthorp

Neil Manthorp grew up on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast after arriving in South Africa as a 12-month old emigre in the company of his parents who sought fresh pastures from the north of England.South Africa’s international sporting exile contributed to Neil starting his sports journalism career in England in 1986 where he worked as a freelance commentator and writer. When South Africa’s return to international competition seemed imminent, he returned to lay the foundations for an independent sports news agency – what would become MWP.
Since then he has covered over 40 tours with the national cricket team as well as becoming an established commentator and columnist with a variety of media outlets in the country.
Apart from an ability to think on his feet and provide astute, critical analysis when required, it is his sense of humour in reporting on sport that has set him aside from many contemporaries.
He has also written Graeme Smith’s Captain’ Diary 2007-2009, Gary Kirstens biography, Gazza, and collaborated with Paddy Upton on The Beer Drinkers Guide to Losing weight. He writes a widely read column for SuperSport on www.SuperCricket.co.za.
